First you need to update theme to the latest version 3.5. Don’t forget to make backup your site.

You can upload images of different dimensions. But the picture depends on the screen. It can be 1600px or 1920px width.

Read here about Events Calendar plugin. There says that 3.8 version has problem. Try to install 3.7 version.
