What does this"Upload image for hover effect" do on single product page's backend

Hi, I am wondering what this “Upload image for hover effect” do on single product page’s backend? When I uploaded the full size product image there, and uploaded a smaller image as a feature image, the full size image didn’t get shown when hovering the product image on the front end. Only the smaller image as a feature image was shown.
