Hi,
I would like to make updates to my site and would like to freeze it to the public. I would like to display a “site maintenance” screen when someone goes to my site. is there a way to do it with the theme? thank you, i look forward to your response!

You can try to use some third-party plugin to implement such functionality.
For example, https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-maintenance-mode/
