  I am trying to have a footer like on a demo https://www.8theme.com/demo/royal/ (4 columns in white, grey line with “ROYAL – most powerful template framework!” and 4 columns in black).

  When I upload the demo content onto my website, for some reason the sidebars and widgets are not getting populated. So I see the content on the front end, but unable to edit it with my information on the back end.

  you need to create footer manually according to this part of theme documentation:
