Footer widgets being displayed horizontally not vertically whatever we do.??

Hi there.

We have tried selecting different footers in the theme options, we have tried creating static blocks.. but whatever we do the footer content is always showing up horizontally in rows, not vertical in columns.??

I can’t see anything in the help files about this? Help please.
