Adding a custom field to the Variation Product Level

Hi Guys

I really need to add an extra custom field to the product variations. In my case a qty field for a number of handles that would be on each size of furniture cupboard.

I found this and wondered if you had any thoughts on whether this might be a good thing to add as an option?
