We were doing the client’s ranking report today and were surprised to find that the incorrect area pages were appearing in Google search for a number of their targeted keywords. As an example, if you type in ‘Spanish escorts London’, the Mexican page appears to be indexed, despite the fact that there is no mention of Spanish escorts on this page.
I logged into the CMS to see if I could spot anything obviously wrong, and what I did notice is that the same thing is happening within the search functionality in WordPress. So if I type in ‘Spanish’ into the search bar within the Pages tab, the Mexican page will be returned as well as the Spanish page. To test an area at random, I typed in ‘Regents Park’ (without the apostrophe on purpose), and the Little Venice page is appearing.
We initially thought this was just a problem with Google’s indexing process, but could it be possible that the pages are cross-referencing each other, either through the code or the structure of the website?
What I also noticed is that within the description of the page in Google’s search results it often pulls through the list of Nationality pages that are in the footer of the template instead of the meta description we set for the page. What’s involved in setting these links to nofollow to combat this?
Thanks and sorry to be a pain – we just need to get to the bottom of this in case it’s a big issue that’s affecting 247’s results. If you need any further details please let me know.
Regards,
Cyan
