Problem caused by YITH WooCommerce Product Add-ons plugin. It works with the product images gallery and does not support our custom gallery and require the default one. I have enabled default WooCommerce gallery as described here https://xstore.helpscoutdocs.com/article/97-support-of-the-woocommerce-additional-variation-images-plugin
